Leadership during Societal Disruption and Breakdown

Leadership during Societal Disruption and Breakdown

Description

November 13th 2023 (for 4 half days and continuing from November 27th for the same) for Executives.

In this highly interactive online course with Professor Jem Bendell, and the Deep Adaptation Forum’s Katie Carr, you will join a cohort of experienced professionals who are seeking to lead change with a realism about the global predicament facing humanity. They will support you in an inter-disciplinary exploration of both sustainability and leadership where orthodoxies will be deconstructed so you can more clearly identify your future work on social and organisational change. In particular, you will explore what leadership on Deep Adaptation to our environmental situation can involve. This concept is based on the perspective that societal breakdown is either likely, inevitable or already occurring. Due to the emotionally challenging topic of the course, it includes diverse forms of experiential learning.

This course happens only once a year, and there is a maximum of 20 participants. The deadline to apply is October 16th 2023 but we anticipate the course to be sold out before the end of the summer.

A month before the online classes begin, there is preparatory study that involves a minimum of 10 hours self-directed learning (videos, reading, reflective writing). The interactive live sessions are 3 hours a day for 4 days (830am to 1130am GMT) which then repeat after a break of a week (i.e. the classes are in the mornings of November 13-16 and 27-30 November 2023). Most participants in previous cohorts have continued to meet regularly online once a month for even years after the course.

100% of the participants in the last iteration of the course agreed that the teaching had been engaging. Comments included:

"Amazing facilitation. The feeling of being in a safe space. The group work I just wanted more of."

"The mix of gentle, reflective and meditative practices, joyful play, hard academia and questioning debate and conversation allowed me to engage with each element in a different way, and preventing me from becoming weary mentally or emotionally from too much of one thing."

The course will also be offered as a credit-awarding module at Masters level (for an additional fee, requiring registration with the University, and assignments to complete: details to follow).
